Medical Device Electropolishing Made Simple

NuGenTec is a one stop shop for electropolishing.  NuGenTec's EP 316 creates a microscopically smooth, corrosion-free surface every single time it is used for electropolishing.  This article will walk you through what electropolishing is and how to incorporate it into your process in 5 simple steps.

What is Electropolishing?

Electropolishing uses a voltage in a conductive solution to pull undesirable buildup, scale, macro- and micro-burrs and embedded contaminants from the surface of metals.  Unlike mechanical finishing processes, NuGenTec's EP 316 never smears, stresses, bends or fractures the crystalline structure of a metal surface. The process improves corrosion resistance, removing layers to reveal a stress-free surface with the desired smoothness and luster while increasing passivity.

Electropolish in 6 Simple Steps

1. Alkaline Cleaning

First, your metal will need to be cleaned. We recommend using a NuGenTec specially formulated alkaline cleaner. After the i316al alkaline cleaning, rinse with DI Water.

2. Acidic Cleaning

Next, your metal will need an acidic treatment to remove scale and oxides.  We recommend the following specially formulated acidic cleaners: After this acidic cleaning, rinse with DI Water.

3. Wick Away Water

Now, remove any residual water using a quick isopropyl alcohol rinse.

4. Electropolish

Use NuGenTec's EP 316 to electropolish and leave a microscopically smooth surface.  After electropolishing, rinse with DI Water.

5. Passivation (Optional)

Dip the part in nitric acid for passivation, then rinse with DI Water.
Note: Passivation is an optional step, as an oxide layer will reform naturally.

6.  Hot Rinse and Dry

Perform a final hot rinse with DI water and forced hot air drying.

Why Use NuGenTec EP 316?

NuGenTec's EP 316  is proven to leave smooth microfinishes every time while remaining less costly than competitors.  NuGenTec's EP 316 does NOT require cryogenic cooling, and is less hygroscopic than conventional electropolishing solutions, allowing for longer bath life.  Unlike mechanical finishing, electropolishing with EP316 leaves will not smear, bend, stress or fracture the crystalline metal surface to and achieves microscopic smoothness and desirable luster.
