What is Rust?

Rust is the common name for iron oxide.  Rust forms as the result of an electrochemical reaction involving a metal that will readily give up electrons (an anode), a medium that allows the transfer of electrons (such as water), and a metal that will readily accept electrons (a cathode).  In the case of steel or iron that rusts, oxygen will accept electrons from iron in the presence of water and form iron oxide.
