Oakite® 360 L
Liquid Alkaline Etchant for Aluminum and Its Alloys
PRIMARY APPLICATION
Oakite® 360 L is an efficient, highly alkaline aluminum etchant which combines uniform etching with light cleaning action, When etching aluminum, a light foam blanket will form to reduce mist. Depth of etch is easy to control. Sequestrants minimize scale build-up on equipment. Oakite 360 L may also be used as a heavy-duty cleaner.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
For aluminum etching, if soil is light, precleaning is unnecessary. Where there is considerable soil and stencil ink, a separate cleaning step is needed. To prepare etching solution, add Oakite 360 L slowly to cold water with constant mixing at these concentrations: for a light etch, 2% to 4% by volume; medium etch, 4% to 6% by volume; heavy etch, 6% to 10% by volume. Mix thoroughly. Heat solution as needed.
Degree of etching is affected by contact time, solution concentration, temperature and the amount of aluminate build-up. A 6% concentration at 80°F (27°C) will etch 1100-H14 alloy at the rate of approximately 0.03 mils per minute. If the temperature is increased to 180°F (82°C), the etch rate increases to 0.66 mils per minute. As dissolved aluminum build-up, etching rate decreases.
To establish uniform etching rates and to extend solution life, constant bleed-off and continuous input of fresh Oakite 360L is recommended. Maintaining average aluminum content at 30 to 45 g/l (4 to 6 oz. /gal) will give optimum results. Follow etching immediately with a cold running water rinse.

Temperature 70 - 120°F (21 - 49°C)
Time 1 - 20 minutes
SOLUTION CONTROL
Solution Measurement
1) With a pipet, place a 5 ml sample of the bath into an Erlenmeyer flask.
2) Add 50 ml of deionized water.
3) Add 5 drops of Gardotest Indicator 2. The color should be pink.
4) Titrate with Gardotest Solution 57 until the color changes from pink to colorless. This is titration A.
5) Add 10 ml of Gardotest Solution 10. If there is dissolved aluminum, the solution will turn pink.
6) Refill the buret and titrate again with Gardotest Solution 57 until the color changes from pink to colorless. This is titration B.
7) The Free Alkalinity is A – (B/3). Example: A = 8, B = 3, A – (B/3) = 8 – (3/3) = 7 ml.
8) The Free Alkalinity may be converted to percent by volume by multiplying by 1.14. Example: 7 ml x 1.14 = 8% by volume Oakite 360 L.
9) The aluminum in grams per liter is B x 1.8. Example: 3 x 1.8 = 5.4 g/l aluminum.

The Chemetall Chemical Metering Pump can be used to automatically maintain the make up chemical requirement of this product. Please contact the Chemetall Process Equipment and Engineering Department for specific recommendations.

Tanks and heating surfaces may be constructed of mild rolled steel although stainless steel is recommended for longer life.
Oakite 360 L contains ingredients acceptable to the FDA and is authorized by the USDA for use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants

STORAGE
Dry indoor storage at temperatures between 40°F and 100°F (4.4°C and 37.8°C) is recommended, away from any incompatible materials referenced in the Material Safety Data Sheets. All containers should be tightly closed when not in use.
NOTE: When exposed to very low temperatures, this product may solidify. If this product is frozen, or is suspected to have previously been frozen, place in a warm location and allow the product to thaw completely. Some reversible separation of ingredients may occur. Prior to using, the product should be mixed thoroughly to establish a homogeneous solution. Failure to thoroughly mix could result in diminished or altered performance characteristics. Contact your Chemetall representative for mixing recommendations.

Any disposal of the materials referenced in this document should be in accordance with all applicable federal, state, providential and local regulations. The process solution can contain components other than those present in the materials as supplied. Analysis of process solutions may be required prior to disposal.
