Oakite® 31
Acidic compound for cleaning, and removing oxides from metals;
also for removing milkstone in dairies.
PRIMARY APPLICATIONS
Oakite® 31 is a liquid, acidic compound used for removing shop dirt, oxides, rust and heat scale, flux and
welding spatter from steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other metals. It is also used for removing
milkstone and similar mineral deposits in dairies, meat processing and other food plants.
Oakite 31 meets the following federal and military specifications: TT-C-490C, Method VI (with or without
alcohol), MIL-C-10578CD, Type V. It contains ingredients acceptable to the FDA; is authorized by the
USDA for use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants; and is approved by the CDA and CDF.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
For Cleaning and Treating Metal by Immersion: Use Oakite 31 at 5 to 25% by volume with water, room
temperature. Follow with cold water running rinse then hot rinse to dry.
For Metal Cleaning and Treating of Large Surfaces by Wipe-on Methods: Use Oakite 31 at 2 to 50%
by volume of water at room temperature. Apply with cloths or brushes, allow to soak for a few minutes, followed by rinsing and wiping dry.
For Milkstone Removal: Oakite 31 is used at 1/2 to 2L (1 to 4 pt) to 227L (60 gal) of water at 60°C
(140°F). Soak or circulate for 30 minutes or more, followed by neutralizing and rinsing.
Solution Control: Concentrations are titrated using Gardotest Procedure 128.

NOTES ON USE (See Material Safety Data Sheet)
When used in tank for treating steel, a 10% by volume of water solution of Oakite 31 may be considered
at the point of exhaustion when the ferrous phosphate level approaches 3.5% (1.26% as iron). Beyond
this point, white deposits may form on the work surface.
Tanks for Oakite 31 may be made of ceramics, acid-proof brick, Karbate, rubber, lead-coated steel or
stainless steels 304 ELC, 316 ELC or 347. Heating coils may be made of impervious carbon or graphite,
such as Karbate Nos. 12 or 22 and Norcordal lead or stainless steels 304 ELC, 316 ELC or 347.
Avoid contact or mixing with chlorine-releasing materials.

Sheets should be read and understood by all personnel in contact with these materials.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
STORAGE
Dry indoor storage at temperatures between 40ºF and 100ºF (4.4ºC and 37.8ºC) is recommended, away
from any incompatible materials referenced in the Material Safety Data Sheets. All containers should be
tightly closed when not in use.
DISPOSAL
Any disposal of the materials referenced in this document should be in accordance with all applicable
federal, state, providential and local regulations. The process solution can contain components other
than those present in the materials as supplied. Analysis of process solutions may be required prior to
disposal.
