Liquid acidic material for deoxidizing and conditioning metals.
PRIMARY APPLICATION
Oakite Deoxidizer SS is a liquid acidic material designed for removing oxides, heat scale, stains and smut
from stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, magnesium, titanium, zirconium and inconel. A tank
immersion material, it may also find application as a bright etched finish for some metals (see attack rates
below).

This material is designed to remove heat scale steel (1010) 119.89 4.72
and to condition metal surfaces. As such, stainless steel (316) 2.29 0.09

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
All metal surfaces must be thoroughly clean to assure successful conditioning through any of the following
procedures.
For Desmutting Aluminum Prior to Conversion Coating
Immerse in a solution of Oakite Deoxidizer SS, 30 to 50% by volume with water, at 32° to 43°C (90° to
110°F). Do not heat above 49°C (120°F).
For Deoxidizing and Brightening Stainless Steel
Immerse in a solution of Oakite Deoxidizer SS, 15% to full strength, depending upon the type and degree
of soils to be removed. Use at 21° to 38°C (70° to 100° F). Do not use above 49°C (120°F).
For Descaling Titanium, Zirconium and Inconel
Immerse in a solution of Oakite Deoxidizer SS, 10% to 50% by volume with water, at 21° to 38°C (70° to
110°F). Do not use above 49°C (120°F).
Time required in all cases will depend upon the type and degree of scale and/or soils to be removed.
Solution Control: Concentrations are titrated using Gardotest Procedure 128 or Gardotest Procedure
152.
For concentrations use Gardotest Procedure 128

EQUIPMENT
Chemetall Oakite Electrodeless Conductivity/Concentration Control System and Chemical Metering Pump
can be used to monitor and automatically maintain the concentration of this product using conductivity.
Please contact the Chemetall Oakite Process Equipment and Engineering Department for specific
recommendations.
NOTES ON USE (See Material Safety Data Sheet)
Avoid contact with glass, ceramic or concrete. If contact is made, rinse surface promptly and thoroughly
with water.
Keep concentrate away from combustible, organic or readily oxidizable materials. Avoid contact or mixing
with chlorine-releasing materials.
Solution tanks should be lined with Koroseal (PVC), teflon, polypropylene or polyethylene. Always add
Oakite Deoxidizer SS to water, never the reverse. Avoid splashing.
Oakite Deoxidizer SS is not recommended for food contact surfaces.
Safety and Handling Precautions: Oakite Deoxidizer SS is a highly acidic material containing nitric and
hydrofluoric acids. Direct contact causes severe burns that may or may not be immediately painful or
visible. It is harmful if swallowed or inhaled.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Wear safety goggles, synthetic rubber gloves and other
suitable protective clothing when handling. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Do not
breath mist from solutions. Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not take internally.
 
First Aid in Case of--or Suspicion of--Contact: Prompt medical attention is absolutely necessary.
Eyes: Immediately flush with cool water for 15 to 30 minutes. Hold eyelids apart while flushing to assure
contact of water with all surfaces of eyes and lids. Get prompt medical attention. Skin: Immediately flush
with large quantities of cool water until all acid is removed, paying particular attention to skin under nails.
Immediately remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get prompt medical attention. Wash
contaminated clothing and shoes before reuse. If swallowed: Rinse out mouth thoroughly. Give large
quantity of water to drink without delay. Follow with milk or 60 ml (2 fl ounces) of milk of magnesia. Get
prompt medical attention. If inhaled: Remove from exposure. Get prompt medical attention.
